CIEMSA

CIEMSA has been providing engineering, construction, assembly, operation and maintenance services for the public and private sectors in Uruguay since 1980. He has broad capabilities in Civil, Structural, Road, Mechanical, Electrical and Industrial Engineering, in areas including Architecture, Industry, Environmental and Renewable, Sanitation and Water, Energy, Transportation and Utilities Infrastructure, among others. Its team has more than a thousand people, including local and international experts, brought together through strategic alliances and cooperation agreements with renowned firms and outstanding professionals.

The challenge

The Municipality of Montevideo has systems based on geographic information that monitor bus routes and stops, the position of waste containers and the route of the trucks that empty them, the maintenance of squares and public spaces, etc. When, for example, a street is cut for repairs, the position of certain bus stops and waste containers is modified, and with it the route of all the lines associated with these stops and of all the trucks responsible for emptying these containers. These controls are carried out through 17 applications, based on a 1995 geographic engine that was experiencing compatibility problems. The great challenge of this project was to build a generic core capable of supporting the specific functionalities of the applications (keeping them independent of each other), and allowing the addition of new functionalities and the extension of the existing ones.

The results

01

The systems technology was entirely upgraded from a heavy, applet-based client to a lightweight, dynamic Javascript solution. This technology upgrade not only solved the obsolescence of the previous one, but also projects the new one into the future, due to its validity in the market and its suitability to complete the planned roadmap.

02

The solution is fully compatible with existing systems and their databases. There is no point in modernizing systems if to do so you have to sacrifice the entire database history, and reprogram the APIs and the apps connected to them. 100% of the history and connected apps have continued to work without problems.

03

The three-pronged project management, Municipality-Ciemsa-BigCheese, worked perfectly. Despite the size and complexity of the project, there were no setbacks in the agreed deadlines and communication between the parties.
